What affects the price of windshield work
- Repair or replace. A chip or short crack can usually be filled. Long cracks or damage in the driver's view need new glass.
- The glass. Rain sensors, heated glass, heads-up displays and acoustic glass all cost more.
- Camera recalibration. Cars with lane-keeping or automatic braking cameras need them recalibrated after a new windshield.
- Factory or aftermarket. Glass from the carmaker usually costs more than aftermarket glass that meets the same safety standard.
- Insurance. Many policies with comprehensive coverage pay for chip repair, and some pay for replacement with no deductible.
The low end of the range is a newer auto glass tech at about $45 an hour. The high end is an experienced pro at about $80 an hour who travels to you. Many auto glass techs have a minimum charge of around $60. Prices are higher in big cities.
Common questions
Should I repair or replace my windshield?
Chips smaller than a quarter and cracks shorter than about six inches can usually be repaired if they are not in the driver's line of sight. Bigger damage, or a crack that reaches the edge of the glass, usually means replacement.
How soon can I drive after a new windshield?
It depends on the urethane. Many techs say to wait at least an hour, and some products need longer. Ask your installer for the safe drive-away time.
