What affects the price of HVAC work
- The job. A tune-up is about an hour. Duct cleaning can take most of a day.
- Refrigerant. It is sold by the pound, and older or larger systems can need several pounds.
- System size. Bigger homes have more ductwork, and two systems mean two tune-ups.
- Timing. Evenings, weekends and emergencies in peak heat or cold often cost 1.5 to 2 times more.
- Repairs found. Capacitors, motors and other parts found during a visit are priced on top.
The low end of the range is a newer HVAC tech at about $75 an hour. The high end is an experienced pro at about $140 an hour who travels to you. Many HVAC techs have a minimum charge of around $100. Prices are higher in big cities.
Common questions
How often should I get my HVAC system serviced?
Most makers suggest a check once a year for each system: the AC in spring and the furnace in fall. A heat pump does both jobs, so it benefits from two visits a year.
Does my AC need refrigerant every year?
No. Refrigerant runs in a sealed loop. If it is low, there is a leak, and a good tech will look for it instead of just topping it off.

How the prices are worked out
Each price is your hourly rate times the typical time for that job, plus supplies and driving, plus your overhead and profit, rounded up to the nearest $5. Small jobs use a $100 minimum. If you work faster or slower than the times shown, adjust your hourly rate.
Before you post prices, check two or three local HVAC techs on Google or Facebook. If you're well below them, you can probably charge more.
